Matilija Poppies Handpainted on Vintage Cabinet Door OOAK

Fried Eggs n' Butter(fly)--one of a kind artwork!

Who'd have thought that vintage cabinet doors could find new life as artwork?? They're rather perfect for the task, being solid wood, already "framed," and are ready to hang using the original hinges, if you like! I love to highlight their history by keeping every nick and imperfection, and enhancing them with sanding and strategic distressing to the finishes I apply.

This piece was inspired by a recent walk through Long Beach, California, where I encountered an enormous bush prolific with huge white blooms. After snapping some photographs and doing some research, I learned that these are matilija poppies, or as they're commonly known, fried egg flowers (for obvious reasons). They are native to my beloved Southern California, so I paired them with an equally native, equally wonderfully named, sleepy orange butterfly! The mottled background with its shadows and silver-green foliage, is blurred and indistinct, sanded clean away in places. This serves to bring the intricately ruffled petals of the flowers and the vivid coloration of the butterfly, into sharp focus. A black border with gilt trim frames the image, but the focal blooms burst right through those boundaries to spill over the edges of the frame, for a nearly three dimensional effect. A unique and distinctive piece of art that magnifies the beauty of the natural world.

Dimensions are 27.5" x 10.5", piece is signed and numbered for authenticity.
